What is ice candy?

Ice candy is a flavoured frozen treat made by freezing sweetened liquid. In India it is sold sealed in a plastic tube or on a stick and eaten straight from the freezer. It is frozen still, not churned like ice cream, so it is icier. No spoon is needed.

FSSAI standards 2.1.14 and 2.1.15 name “Ice Cream”, “Milk Lolly” and “Frozen Dessert”. They do not name “ice candy” or “ice lolly”. So the legal name on a pack can differ from the word on its front. Read the name printed on the pack. Popsicle is a Unilever trademark.

Ice candy, sip up, ice pop, chuski: are they the same?

Mostly yes. Each word has its own history.

  • Ice candy. A word used by Karnataka brands — one retail listing is titled “Nandini Ice Candy - Orange, 50g”. In the Philippines, the same word means home-made frozen tubes.
  • Sip up. An Indian name for tube treats. It is also a product name: a Mangaluru maker lists a range called “Sip-Up”. Some people say “sip up ice cream” — check the pack, because “ice cream” is a legal name.
  • Ice pop, ice lolly. A frozen treat on a stick. “Ice lolly” is the UK word.
  • Chuski, ice gola. Casual Indian words for a similar treat.

Why does searching “ice candy” show machines?

Many online sellers sell the machines that make ice candy. IndiaMART’s Bengaluru “ice candy” page is titled “Ice Candy Making Machine in Bengaluru, Karnataka”. On 31 October 2026, Google India autocomplete for “ice candy” also showed “ice candy machine”. Look for a packet, a flavour and a pack size. A machine listing shows a freezer or mould, and a price in lakhs.

What should a shop owner know before stocking ice candy?

Terms differ by brand, so ask each supplier in writing. Six questions to ask:

  2. 2What storage temperature and shelf life are printed on the pack?
  3. 3What is the pack size, and how many pieces are in a carton?
  4. 4What is the minimum order, and which areas do you deliver to?
  5. 5What legal name and FSSAI licence number are on the pack?

Questions people ask about ice candy

Is ice candy the same as ice cream?
No. Ice cream is made from milk, and may have air whipped in. In India, full-fat ice cream must have at least 10% milk fat and 36% total solids. Ice candy is frozen still, without churning, so it is icier. Always read the legal name on the pack.
What is sip up ice candy?
Sip up is an Indian name for tube-shaped frozen treats. Sip up ice candy usually means a flavoured tube you tear open and sip. At least one maker uses Sip-Up as a product name, so the words can mean the category or one brand.
Is ice candy vegetarian?
It depends on the recipe, so check the pack for the green vegetarian mark. In India, milk counts as vegetarian, so an ice candy made with milk can carry the green mark. LoveSip carries the mark and contains milk, so it is not vegan.
Do I need a freezer to stock ice candy?
It depends on the brand. Some ice candy is delivered frozen, so you need freezer space from day one. Some brands supply a liquid at room temperature and say a retailer needs no refrigeration. Ask each supplier which type it is, and read the storage temperature on the pack.
